Michigan man to turn life around after domestic violence charges

For one Michigan man, a conviction of domestic assault has led to a decision to turn his life around. He told the court that he recognizes his actions and hopes that this will help him make better decisions in the future.

His conviction stems from charges in April for domestic assault and obstructing a police officer. At the time of his arrest, he had been on parole for a drug-related conviction nearly three years ago. Now he will serve both sentences for the most current convictions after he serves his sentence for the parole violation.

It is unclear what led up to the domestic assault, but the prosecutor in this case described it as "very serious". The Michigan man had broken into his girlfriend's home while she was there and proceeded to beat her. After the assault, he left in her vehicle.

He was convicted on both charges and as a result, was sentenced to two years of prison for each conviction. He will be serving those sentences at the same time, but after completing the sentence for his parole violation.

Being charged with or even simply being accused of domestic violence is a serious matter. Even if the situation had been a simply argument that escalated into physically abusive behavior, prosecutors often aggressively seek a conviction.

Like this man, a conviction for domestic violence can have an impact on the individual's life, even years down the line. Any type of criminal conviction can make it more difficult to find a job, get an education, and even maintain relationships with friends and family.
